How much does it cost to build a mobile app?

The price of a mobile app is set by a few decisions you make before a line of code is written — native or cross-platform, one platform or two, thin or deep. Here they are.

Mobile apps carry a particular budgeting trap: they look simple. Most people use dozens of them a day, each one clean and quick, and it is easy to assume that building one is a small job. Some are. But the polish you feel in a good app is the expensive part, and the price is set less by the app's size than by a few decisions made at the very start.

Native or cross-platform — the first fork

The biggest early decision is how the app is built. Native means building separately for iOS and Android in each platform's own tools — the best possible performance and feel, at the cost of, roughly, building twice. Cross-platform (React Native, Flutter) means writing most of the app once and running it on both, which can cut the cost of covering two platforms substantially while being more than good enough for the large majority of apps. The right choice depends on what the app does: a graphics-heavy game or something pushing the hardware wants native; a business app, a marketplace, or a service app is usually well served cross-platform. This one decision can move the total cost by a third or more.

What actually drives the price

Beyond that fork, the same forces that price any software apply, with a mobile twist. One platform or two: launching on a single platform first is a legitimate way to prove an idea for roughly half the reach cost. Backend: most real apps are the visible tip of a server that stores data, handles accounts, and does the actual work — and that backend is often the larger share of the budget, invisible though it is. Device features: camera, GPS, push notifications, offline use, payments, and Bluetooth each add real work. Offline behaviour in particular — an app that must keep working with no signal and sync later — is deceptively expensive, because keeping data correct across a disconnected device and a server is genuinely hard. And the app-store bar: getting through Apple's and Google's review, and meeting the quality users now expect, is work that a web page never has to do.

Ballpark ranges

Illustratively, and assuming a competent team: a simple, well-scoped app on one platform — a focused purpose, a straightforward backend — commonly lands in the low tens of thousands of euros. A solid cross-platform app for both iOS and Android, with a real backend, accounts, and a few device features, typically runs from the mid tens of thousands into the low hundreds. Anything with heavy offline behaviour, real-time features, complex integrations, or strict compliance climbs from there. As always, the same brief can vary widely on quality and reliability, which are exactly the things you cannot see in a demo but feel every day in use.

The part people forget: after launch

A mobile app is never finished at launch. Apple and Google release new operating systems every year that can break an app that is not maintained; users report bugs; the store guidelines change. A mobile app carries an ongoing cost simply to keep working, before any new features — and a budget that treats launch as the finish line is planning to be surprised. The realistic way to think about a mobile app is as a product you will keep investing in, not a project you buy once.

How to spend wisely

The smartest money in mobile is spent on doing less, first. Pick one platform and the single core experience, build it to a genuinely high standard, and get it in front of real users — their behaviour will tell you whether the idea works and what to build next far more reliably than a longer feature list will. Almost every successful app you can name started smaller than you remember. Starting small is not cutting corners; it is how you avoid spending a large budget building the wrong app beautifully.
